NNPC wraps up 14th annual sports fiesta, showcases teamwork, excellence

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. concluded the 14th edition of its annual Sports Fiesta on Saturday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, in a grand celebration of talent, unity, and organizational camaraderie.

The week-long event, which drew hundreds of employees from across the company, featured competitions in 13 sports disciplines, including football, swimming, tennis, scrabble, and a variety of indoor and outdoor games.

The fiesta, themed “Energy in Motion: Compete, Connect and Celebrate”, aimed to strengthen interdepartmental relationships and promote teamwork while encouraging staff to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism.

Employees were organised into six teams representing NNPC’s six operational zones.

Team Integrity, comprising members from Port Harcourt and Benin, Team Excellence from Lagos and Warri, and Team Sustainability from Abuja and Kaduna, competed vigorously for top honors, reflecting the company’s core values of integrity, excellence, and sustainability.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Ojulari, expressed delight at the high level of participation and enthusiasm displayed by staff throughout the fiesta.

“Watching the employees compete with such passion and energy reminded me of the vital role teamwork plays in achieving organizational success,” Ojulari said.

“This event is a true reflection of ‘energy in motion,’ demonstrating not only physical ability but also collaboration, focus, and discipline.”

Ojulari emphasised that the skills and values showcased during the fiesta extend beyond sports, encouraging staff to apply the same dedication to their professional duties.

He also highlighted the company’s ongoing transformation, stating that the unity, discipline, and sportsmanship observed at the event are qualities that will drive NNPC toward becoming a world-class energy enterprise.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Suleiman Suleiman, described the 2025 edition as a resounding success.

He noted that the event provided a rare platform for employees from different units to interact, exchange ideas, and build lasting professional relationships.

“In an organisation as large and diverse as NNPC, opportunities for such engagement are limited, making this fiesta an important tool for fostering cohesion and team spirit,” Suleiman said.

The competition also served as a preparatory stage for the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) scheduled for February 2 to 5, 2026.

Suleiman revealed that performances at the fiesta would help identify top athletes to represent NNPC at the upcoming national event.

At the close of the competition, Team Integrity emerged as overall champions, securing 31 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze medals.

Team Sustainability placed second with 15 gold, 26 silver, and 23 bronze medals, while Team Excellence finished third with 13 gold, 16 silver, and 19 bronze medals.

Team Integrity also dominated in trophy wins, taking home nine awards in total, solidifying its position as the highest-performing contingent.

The 14th NNPC Sports Fiesta concluded with an awards ceremony, bringing the week-long celebrations to a close with music, cheers, and a renewed spirit of teamwork and excellence.

The event reaffirmed NNPC’s commitment to staff development, unity, and fostering a culture of performance and resilience as the company looks ahead to NOGIG 2026.
