Macron pledges France’s solidarity with Nigeria in fight against terrorism

French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed France’s support for Nigeria as the West African nation continues to battle escalating security threats, particularly from terrorist groups operating in its northern regions.

Macron disclosed that he held discussions with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, during which he pledged to strengthen collaboration with Nigerian authorities and increase assistance to communities affected by violence.

He emphasised the responsibility of global partners in confronting the crisis.

“No one can remain a bystander,” Macron said in a statement on X, stressing the urgent need for international engagement in tackling terrorism in Nigeria.

He added that France would intensify its support at the request of President Tinubu, particularly for vulnerable populations in affected areas.

The statement comes against a backdrop of growing insecurity across Nigeria. On November 26, 2025, President Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency, ordering the recruitment of additional personnel for both the Nigerian Armed Forces and the police to address rising attacks.

Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in violent incidents, including killings in Kebbi and Kwara states, as well as mass abductions from educational institutions.

Among the most notable were kidnappings of over 300 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga in Kebbi and St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Niger State.

While some of the kidnapped students have been released or managed to escape, many remain in captivity, heightening national concern.

Macron’s pledge signals France’s commitment to deepening intelligence sharing, joint operations, and humanitarian support, as well as urging other international partners to step up efforts against terrorism in Nigeria.

As insecurity persists, authorities continue to prioritize safeguarding communities and restoring stability, with France positioned as a key ally in these initiatives.
