CAN condemns movie title “A Very Dirty Christmas” as offensive to Christian faith

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised strong objections to the title of the upcoming movie, “A Very Dirty Christmas,” describing it as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith.

In a statement issued by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association emphasised that Christmas is a sacred season marking the birth of Jesus Christ, symbolizing purity, peace, love, and redemption.

CAN argued that linking such a holy celebration with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual significance and trivializes a solemn religious observance.

While acknowledging the importance of creative freedom and artistic expression, Archbishop Okoh stressed that such liberties must be exercised responsibly and with sensitivity, especially in a religiously diverse country like Nigeria.

“Creativity should build understanding and unity, not provoke or offend deeply held beliefs,” he said.

The association also expressed concern that the movie’s title passed through regulatory and professional channels without adequate scrutiny.

CAN has called on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to clarify how the film was approved for public exhibition, particularly given its release during the Christmas season.

CAN urged Nollywood stakeholders, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), to adopt clear positions on the use of religious themes and symbols in ways that may offend faith communities.

The association specifically appealed to the film’s producer, Ini Edo, to reconsider the title, issue a public apology, and take deliberate measures to ensure that sacred seasons and religious symbols are treated with dignity.

“At a time when the nation is already grappling with serious moral and social challenges, actions that trivialise sacred values only deepen division and erode mutual respect,” the statement read.

Archbishop Okoh reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to peaceful engagement, pledging that the association would continue to speak out whenever the dignity of the Christian faith is undermined in the public space.

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between creative expression and respect for religious sensitivities in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly during significant cultural and religious celebrations.
