Tinubu mourns passing of Oba of Badagry at 89

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound condolences to the Government and people of Lagos State following the death of Oba Babatunde Akran, the revered Oba of Badagry, who passed away at the age of 89.
In a statement released Monday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president commiserated with the Lagos State Traditional Council, where the late monarch served as permanent Vice Chairman, the Badagry Council of Chiefs, and the sons and daughters of the historic kingdom.
Tinubu described Oba Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I as a visionary and purposeful leader who, over more than four decades, provided steady guidance to his people while promoting harmony, unity, tolerance, and prosperity across the Badagry kingdom.
The president also acknowledged the monarch’s role in protecting, preserving, and projecting Badagry’s historical significance—notably as a former slave harbour and route—and celebrated the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, which continues to attract global attention.
He further praised the wisdom of the Oba and his council in balancing tradition with modernity, managing multicultural interests, and safeguarding cultural icons for future generations.
Reflecting on the monarch’s professional life, Tinubu noted that Oba Akran had a long career in teaching and journalism, contributing significantly to publications such as the West African Pilot, Post Group of Newspapers, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria before ascending to the throne.
The president prayed for the repose of the late Oba’s soul and called on God to grant comfort and strength to his family and the people of Badagry.
