Oborevwori flags off N59.7bn Agbor–Uromi flyover

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, on Monday commenced construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor described the project as a major safety and economic intervention designed to curb frequent accidents and ease traffic congestion along the busy corridor.

Oborevwori said the project was necessitated by years of deadly crashes and gridlock at the Agbor/Uromi Junction, a major intersection on a federal highway.

He explained that the constant interaction among vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians had made the junction extremely dangerous, demanding a permanent solution.

The governor disclosed that the project had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion timeline of 14 months.

He said the flyover would feature a 1.3-kilometre bridge, dual carriageways, access ramps, roundabouts, concrete drains, kerbs, and solar-powered streetlights.

Oborevwori described the Agbor–Uromi axis as a critical transportation and economic link between the Eastern and Western Niger Delta, as well as a gateway to Northern Nigeria.

He noted that the route plays a vital role in national commerce and movement of goods and people.

According to the governor, the flyover will reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and open up new economic opportunities for residents and businesses.

He added that thousands of road users would benefit daily from the improved infrastructure.

The governor said the project would generate employment for engineers, artisans, labourers, transporters, and small-scale vendors throughout the construction period.

He described the initiative as part of his administration’s broader commitment to inclusive development.

Oborevwori revealed that the state government had released N100 billion as a special intervention fund, with N4 billion allocated to each of the 25 local government areas for infrastructure projects.

He said this was in addition to other sector-based investments across the state.

The governor listed additional projects in Ika South, including a N15.4 billion concrete drainage and road construction project to tackle flooding and erosion.

He also announced plans for a N12 billion, 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.

Oborevwori assured residents that contracts under his administration are awarded strictly based on competence and performance.

He expressed confidence that Julius Berger would deliver the flyover within schedule.

Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa described the flyover as a landmark project and commended Oborevwori for sustaining development continuity.

He said the widespread infrastructure projects across the state reflected people-focused leadership.

Okowa also praised President Bola Tinubu, noting that ongoing economic reforms, though challenging, were aimed at long-term national stability.

Commissioner for Works, Comrade Reuben Izeze, described Oborevwori as hardworking and bold, urging the Ika people to continue supporting his administration.

Representing Julius Berger, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence placed in the company.

He pledged that the flyover would be delivered to the highest standards, drawing from the firm’s experience with similar projects in the state.

NDDC Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, assured that the commission would collaborate with the state to complete the Abraka–Obiaruku–Abavo–Agbor Road.

He described the road as a crucial feeder to the new flyover.

Ika South Council Chairman, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, called the flyover a “project of destiny” and praised the governor’s action-driven leadership.

Traditional rulers, lawmakers, party leaders, and community representatives also commended Oborevwori and pledged continued support for his administration.
