NNPP sets conditions for Kano governor before defection

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has clarified its position regarding Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s political future, insisting that he is free to leave the party but must first follow formal procedures by submitting a written resignation.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, the state chairman of NNPP, emphasised that the party would not obstruct Governor Yusuf should he decide to defect to another political platform.
He however, made it clear that the governor must adhere to party regulations before making any move.
“Governor Yusuf remains a bona fide member of the NNPP. We respect him as the sitting governor and as a party member.
”But if he wishes to leave, it must be done through the proper channel by formally tendering his resignation to the officially recognised leadership of the party. This is a non-negotiable requirement,” he said.
The statement comes amid increasing speculation that Governor Yusuf, elected under the NNPP banner in 2023, may be planning a defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party warned that any attempt to bypass the resignation process could have serious legal repercussions.
“With court judgments already delivered in our favour by three separate tribunals, any unilateral move by Governor Yusuf without complying with due process could be challenged in the courts,” Doguwa said.
“Should the Supreme Court uphold these rulings, there could be consequences for any defection carried out in violation of party rules.”
He further reiterated that the current leadership of the NNPP in Kano is legally recognised, following the courts’ decisions, and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect and enforce these rulings.
“INEC must recognise our leadership structure as confirmed by the courts and ensure that all party-related actions comply with these decisions,” he added.
Doguwa also sought to reassure party members that the NNPP remains committed to maintaining stability within the state and protecting the integrity of its political platform.
He called on the governor and all other members to respect the party’s constitution and legal framework, warning that attempts to circumvent these processes could create unnecessary political and legal complications.
Political observers said the NNPP’s insistence on formal resignation highlights the party’s desire to protect its interests ahead of the 2027 elections in Kano State, a key battleground in northern Nigeria.
Governor Yusuf’s next steps could significantly influence the political alignment of the state and the balance of power between the NNPP and the APC.
