Nigerian Navy strengthens media collaboration to curb oil theft in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Navy is stepping up engagement with the media to enhance public awareness and transparency of its anti-crude oil theft operations in Bayelsa State.
Commodore Omobamidele Akinbami, commander of NNS SOROH, highlighted that regular interactions with journalists have helped ensure more accurate and balanced reporting of the Navy’s activities.
Speaking during a media visit to the Naval Base in Bayelsa, conducted under the supervision of Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, Akinbami explained that journalists now routinely seek clarifications before publishing reports.
This has improved public understanding of the Navy’s adherence to its operational mandate and rules of engagement.
He noted that embedding media personnel during operations and the use of modern technology such as drones have reduced response times and the physical strain of patrolling the challenging riverine terrain.
Akinbami also credited the synergy between security agencies in Bayelsa for improving peace and security, despite obstacles posed by swampy environments and remote locations.
The commander further noted that a pipeline vandalism syndicate dismantled in mid-2025 had led to a significant drop in pipeline explosions, although isolated incidents continue to be addressed.
Maj.-Gen. Onoja added that the media engagement initiative, approved by the Chief of Defence Staff, is designed to allow journalists to oversee and report objectively on military operations, fostering better civil–military relations and public confidence in the Nigerian armed forces.
The visit is part of a broader effort by Defence Headquarters to promote transparency, highlight the sacrifices of troops, and demonstrate the Navy’s commitment to combating crude oil theft and ensuring maritime security in the Niger Delta.
