Akwa Ibom governor questions mortuary priority during hospital project tour

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has sparked widespread reactions on social media after a video surfaced showing him questioning a contractor over prioritising mortuary plans instead of essential hospital facilities during a project inspection.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a visit to the Ikot Ekpene Udo General Hospital project site, where the governor and members of his development team were reviewing construction progress and assessing the focus of the building plans.
In the viral video, Governor Eno appeared surprised and mildly stern as he addressed the contractor, saying, “Why did you start mortuary first, why mortuary? I say build hospital, you go start with mortuary. Don’t say that kind of a thing again, don’t show me mortuary.”
The comment, delivered in a firm but lighthearted tone, quickly drew attention online, sparking discussions on project priorities and the symbolism of focusing on death-related infrastructure before life-saving medical facilities.
Social media users debated the governor’s approach, with some praising his insistence on practical public health priorities, while others joked about the unusual sequence in construction planning.
The governor’s inspection tour also included visits to other key infrastructure projects across the state, including the Ikot Ekpene Udo Bridge and the Oron Marine Jetty.
He emphasised that these developments are intended to serve the public, noting, “All these projects belong to the people of Akwa Ibom State.”
Governor Eno has consistently taken a hands-on approach to monitoring government-funded projects, and his visit to the hospital site reflects his administration’s focus on ensuring that facilities are functional, accessible, and aligned with the needs of residents.
