New CCTV surveillance centre to enhance policing, reduce crime — IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed optimism that the newly established Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance centre in Lagos will play a major role in strengthening policing operations and reducing criminal activities across the state in 2026.
Egbetokun made this known on Monday during an inspection visit to the facility, describing the centre as a critical component of the Nigeria Police Force’s shift toward technology-driven security management.
According to the police chief, the deployment of the surveillance infrastructure is aimed at reinforcing intelligence gathering, improving response time to security incidents, and enhancing the overall capacity of the police to prevent and detect crime.
He noted that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise policing operations and strengthen the country’s internal security framework through the strategic use of digital tools and innovation.
The IGP commended the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, as well as other partners involved in the development of the project, emphasising that effective collaboration among government agencies remains essential for achieving long-term security objectives.
“As we move further into 2026, the public should expect improved service delivery from the police,” Egbetokun said, adding that the force is determined to build on the progress recorded in the previous year.
He described the Nigeria Police Force as a forward-looking institution committed to continuous reform and improvement, stressing that the adoption of modern surveillance technology would help lower crime rates while restoring public trust in law enforcement.
The police boss further urged officers and personnel assigned to the facility to utilise the equipment responsibly and professionally, in line with internationally accepted standards.
He reassured Nigerians of the force’s resolve to uphold professionalism, efficiency, and effective protection of lives and property nationwide.
The CCTV surveillance centre was formally activated on Jan. 14 by the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh.
The state-of-the-art digital facility was constructed and fully equipped by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Works, under the supervision of Engr. Dave Umahi.
The centre provides real-time monitoring of the Third Mainland Bridge, adjoining waterways, and other strategic locations within the Island axis of Lagos.
Security officials say the system will enable early detection of suspicious activities and rapid intervention by law enforcement agencies.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to adopt proactive policing strategies aimed at deterring crime and strengthening public safety in key urban and transportation corridors.
