Lagos seals Ladipo spare parts market over environmental violations

The Lagos State Government on Sunday shut down Ladipo Spare Parts Market along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) over repeated environmental infractions.

The closure marks the third shutdown in four years.

The action was announced by State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his X (Twitter) account, stating: “Lagos State Government, this morning, sealed Ladipo Spare Parts Market along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) over repeated environmental infractions; indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median/highway and illegal street trading. #ZeroToleranceLagos.”

Wahab reiterated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration prioritises environmental cleanliness, public health, and safety, in line with the THEMES Plus agenda, stressing that all markets in Lagos must adhere strictly to waste management best practices.

The move forms part of the state’s ongoing enforcement drive to ensure compliance with environmental laws, discourage street trading, and prevent improper waste disposal.

The market, located in Mushin, had previously faced sanctions for similar violations.

In 2023, Ladipo Market was allowed to reopen after complying with waste management standards.

Kadiri Folashade, Public Affairs Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, noted that the market had met the requirements set by the authorities.
