PDP secretariat in Abuja remains sealed despite reopening announcement

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, remained closed on Monday, contrary to assurances by the party’s Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee that the office would reopen.

The committee had signaled that the facility would resume operations following consultations with electoral authorities and internal party deliberations.

A faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had earlier announced plans to reopen the headquarters after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held its quarterly meeting with party leaders.

The group expressed optimism that normal administrative and political activities would soon resume at the long-shuttered secretariat.

However, a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) visit confirmed that the premises were still firmly inaccessible.

The main gates remained locked, with large coils of razor wire blocking access and preventing staff or officials from entering.

Security personnel, including police patrols and armed officers, maintained a strong presence around the compound, citing the absence of directives to relax security measures.

The Nigeria Police Force originally sealed the secretariat on Nov. 19, 2025, following violent clashes between rival PDP factions. The dispute involved the Taminu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) and the faction headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

While Senator Samuel Anyanwu suggested reopening the secretariat on Monday, the Turaki-led NWC cautioned that access should remain restricted pending court rulings.

The NWC warned that reopening the offices amidst ongoing litigation could constitute contempt of court, underscoring the delicate nature of the party’s internal crisis.

The prolonged closure continues to disrupt the routine functions of Nigeria’s main opposition party, raising concerns about administrative paralysis ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
