NAFDAC faces protest over sachet alcohol ban

Members of the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees occupied the Lagos office of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Thursday.
The protesters gathered at the Isolo complex, demanding a halt to enforcement of the nationwide sachet alcohol ban.
Union leaders claimed the Federal Government had directed NAFDAC to suspend the restriction and unseal shut production lines.
They said the alleged directive came from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Security Adviser.
Workers warned that continued enforcement of the ban threatens jobs and disrupts operations across the food and beverage sector.
Earlier this month, NAFDAC began implementing the nationwide ban on alcohol packaged in sachets and PET bottles.
The move drew strong reactions from manufacturers and labour groups, sparking debates on social media.
Reports circulated claiming the Federal Government had ordered a suspension of the ban, prompting confusion among stakeholders.
NAFDAC dismissed the claims as false and misleading in a statement signed by Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye.
The agency affirmed it had received no directive to halt enforcement and operates strictly within its statutory mandate.
It reiterated its commitment to public health, regulatory compliance, and warned against unverified information causing public anxiety or economic uncertainty.
NAFDAC urged stakeholders to rely solely on official communication channels for policy updates.
As tensions continue, industry players await clarity on the future of sachet alcohol production and sales in Nigeria.
