Sen. Okey Ezea laid to rest amid tears, tributes

The remains of late Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District, were buried on Friday in his hometown of Itchi, Igboeze-South Local Government Area, Enugu State, amid heartfelt tributes and mourning.

Ezea, elected to the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62 after a brief illness.

Born on August 11, 1963, he was remembered for his unwavering dedication to his constituents and advocacy for social and political justice.

During the funeral service, Bishop Godfrey Onah of Nsukka Catholic Diocese described Ezea as “an activist for Nsukka people” who steadfastly defended the rights and welfare of his constituents.

He urged attendees to reflect on the inevitability of death and the need for spiritual preparedness.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State hailed Ezea as a “forthright, uncompromising and dedicated politician,” commending the large turnout of mourners as evidence of his positive impact on the community.

He also expressed condolences on behalf of the state and reassured the family of the government’s support.

The late senator’s eldest son, Jideofor Ezea, expressed gratitude to the governor, the Catholic Church, and the burial committee led by Senator Victor Umeh, promising to uphold his father’s legacy of service.

Senator Umeh described Ezea as a “good man who lived and died for his people,” emphasizing the loss to Nsukka and the broader Igbo community.

Dignitaries at the burial included Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senate President, Sen. Enyinaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, and Mr. Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, among others.

The burial was marked by solemn tributes, reflections on Ezea’s life of service, and a commitment to continue his fight for justice and the common good of the Igbo people.
