NiDCOM condemns killing of Nigerian e-hailing driver in South Africa

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has strongly condemned the killing of 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlet, in Pretoria, South Africa, describing the incident as “unacceptable and deeply disturbing.”
In a statement from Abuja, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa urged South African authorities to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators.
She expressed concern over the recurring violent attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, stressing that justice “must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
Dabiri-Erewa also announced that NiDCOM would enhance rapid response protocols, institutionalise structured escalation mechanisms, and intensify engagement with host authorities to safeguard Nigerians abroad.
According to South African police, a female suspect has been arrested in connection with the February 11, 2026, murder in Pretoria West.
She is expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on February 16 on charges of car hijacking and murder.
Police reports indicate that Satlet had picked up two passengers via an e-hailing platform before the attack.
His body and vehicle were later discovered in Atteridgeville, while authorities continue searching for the male suspect. Dashcam footage reportedly aided the arrest.
The killing has sparked outrage among Nigerians both in South Africa and at home, with calls for improved safety measures for e-hailing drivers who operate in high-risk environments.
Satlet, described as hardworking and ambitious, was preparing to graduate next month and had plans for further studies abroad.
Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed that while Nigeria respects South Africa’s sovereignty, the protection of Nigerians abroad remains a non-negotiable priority.
