Nigeria and Canada have moved closer to launching direct commercial flights after both countries signed an expanded air transport agreement aimed at boosting aviation, trade, tourism and education.
The agreement, signed in Abuja, marks a major breakthrough in bilateral relations by allowing both nations to designate multiple airlines for scheduled operations between their territories.
It also strengthens cooperation beyond aviation, creating fresh opportunities for businesses, investors, students and families.
Officials from both countries concluded the deal after an extensive technical review of the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement, paving the way for what could become the first direct scheduled flights between Nigeria and Canada.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, “The expanded agreement marks a significant milestone in the aviation relationship between Nigeria and Canada.”
The ministry added that “It introduces several important enhancements designed to improve connectivity, promote tourism, facilitate trade, and create new opportunities for airlines and businesses in both countries.”
Under the new framework, airlines from each country will be permitted to operate up to 14 passenger flights every week and 10 dedicated cargo flights weekly.
The agreement also grants Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights for cargo carriers, enabling greater flexibility in international freight operations.
Authorities believe the deal will reduce travel time, improve passenger convenience, lower logistics costs and deepen commercial and cultural ties between both nations.
The development is expected to benefit thousands of Nigerians with strong links to Canada, particularly students.
The ministry disclosed that “As of March 31, 2026, more than 25,000 Nigerians hold valid Canadian study permits, making Nigeria one of Canada’s major international student source countries.”
Officials also expect the expanded aviation partnership to encourage educational exchanges, tourism, investment, business travel and family reunification.
The latest agreement represents the biggest upgrade to the Nigeria-Canada air services framework since it was first negotiated more than a decade ago, signalling a new phase in cooperation between both countries.
