Peru congress removes interim president amid corruption allegations

Peru’s Congress voted to impeach interim President Jose Jeri, marking the seventh presidential turnover in a decade, often linked to corruption or political instability.
Jeri, 39, faced accusations of irregular government appointments and alleged graft involving a Chinese businessman.
Having assumed office in October following the ouster of Dina Boluarte, Jeri denied wrongdoing but was placed under investigation after reports that multiple women were improperly hired into government roles.
The controversy coincided with a record 30+ candidates preparing for April elections.
Political observers warned that the crisis reflects both widespread institutional weakness and the growing influence of corruption and organized crime, particularly in extortion cases targeting transport workers.
Congress is set to elect a new leader, who will serve as interim president until the next elected administration takes over in July.
