Peter Obi criticises FG over solar-only plan for Aso Rock

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has condemned the federal government’s plan to abandon the national electricity grid in favor of fully relying on solar power for the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
Obi described the decision as “gross neglect and deeply worrisome,” noting that it sends the wrong message about the government’s commitment to ensuring stable electricity for Nigerians.
He highlighted that the national grid has continued to underperform despite promises made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his election campaign, where he vowed to deliver steady power within four years.
Thirty-two months into Tinubu’s administration, Obi said, the federal government is reportedly planning to disconnect the Presidential Villa from the grid, even as significant sums have been allocated in recent budgets for solar installations and grid maintenance.
Obi warned that while renewable energy is important, abandoning the grid at the seat of power sets a troubling precedent.
“If those in authority disconnect themselves from the system, who then will connect the ordinary Nigerian to reliable power?” Obi questioned, stressing that leadership should prioritise citizens’ access to stable electricity.
He further argued that citizens expect effort, transparency, and measurable improvements, even if promises are not fully realised.
“Leadership must serve the people, not isolate itself from their daily struggles,” Obi wrote on X, emphasising the need for compassion and accountability in governance.
The former governor’s comments have reignited debates about Nigeria’s power sector, energy policy priorities, and the balance between promoting renewable energy and ensuring reliable access for citizens.
