Rivers Assembly halts Fubara impeachment

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers met as a Committee of the Whole.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule said the move followed consultations at the Presidential Villa.

He disclosed that a high-level meeting involved Governor Siminalayi Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and President Bola Tinubu.

According to the Speaker, the governor and his deputy withdrew suits filed against the Assembly.

In response, lawmakers directed their lawyers to withdraw a pending appeal case.

Amaewhule said both sides agreed to de-escalate tensions in the interest of stability.

The House subsequently voted unanimously to halt the impeachment process.

Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol urged members to honour the President’s intervention.

He advised the House to formally rescind the impeachment notice and related legal actions.

The lawmakers said they expect the executive arm to adhere strictly to constitutional provisions.

They warned against actions capable of reigniting political confrontation.

This marks the third suspension of impeachment moves against the governor.

The impeachment push began in January over allegations of gross misconduct.

Twenty-six lawmakers signed a notice citing constitutional breaches.

The accusations included demolition of the Assembly complex and unauthorised expenditures.

Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu also faced allegations of unconstitutional financial approvals.

However, judicial interventions stalled the process.

The Chief Judge, Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, declined to set up an investigative panel.

He cited a subsisting court order restraining further action.

Justice Florence Fiberesima had earlier issued an interim injunction halting proceedings.

The legal disputes deepened the political crisis in the state.

Last week, President Bola Tinubu hosted closed-door talks with key actors.

Minister Nyesom Wike confirmed the meeting was initiated to restore calm.

He expressed optimism that the intervention would bring lasting peace.

The talks followed renewed impeachment threats by lawmakers loyal to the minister.

The crisis revived tensions between the governor and his predecessor.
A similar impeachment attempt in 2025 led to a state of emergency.

President Tinubu suspended elected officials and appointed a sole administrator.

Governor Fubara later returned to office after reconciliation efforts.
The latest suspension raises hopes of a durable truce between both arms of government in Rivers State.
