Rivers Senator Mpigi dies at 64

Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly, has died at the age of 64.

Federal lawmaker served over a decade in National Assembly.

His death was confirmed on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following a brief illness, according to family and political associates.

Mpigi was serving as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works at the time of his passing.

In that role, he supervised legislative oversight on federal road projects and other public infrastructure nationwide.

Siminalayi Fubara expressed shock over the senator’s death.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, the governor described Mpigi as a trusted ally and seasoned politician.

He said the late senator remained one of the prominent figures in Rivers politics.

The governor noted that Mpigi’s death came at a time when his experience and leadership were still needed in the state.

He extended condolences to the senator’s family, constituents in Rivers South-East, and members of the Senate.

Mpigi began his federal legislative journey in the House of Representatives in 2011.

He represented the Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency for two consecutive terms until 2019.

In 2019, he was elected to the Senate and secured re-election in 2023.

His return to the upper chamber strengthened his standing within national politics.

A longstanding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mpigi was known for his advocacy on infrastructure and grassroots empowerment.

Recent political developments suggested he was drawing closer to the All Progressives Congress.

Despite shifting alliances, he maintained influence across party lines in Rivers State.

Mpigi hailed from Tai Local Government Area and was of Ogoni descent.

He earned recognition for supporting education in his district through scholarship schemes.

His initiatives included grants for postgraduate studies aimed at expanding opportunities for young constituents.

Political associates described him as accessible and deeply connected to his community.
