Wike declares work-free day for FCT polls

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday a work-free day ahead of the FCT Area Council elections.
He also announced a restriction of movement from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, across the six area councils.
Presidential Approval Secured
Wike said the measures were approved by President Bola Tinubu.
He made the announcement in a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations.
According to him, the work-free day will enable residents travel to their communities to vote.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the movement restriction.
The minister urged residents to turn out in large numbers.
He said the election of chairmen and councillors is crucial to grassroots development.
Wike appealed for orderly conduct and respect for electoral rules.
He encouraged voters to accept the outcome of the polls in good faith.
Wike commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law.
He described the move as a step toward strengthening democratic institutions.
