FG investigates Plateau mining tragedy, warns of sanctions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a probe into the deadly gas incident at a mining site in Company Zurak, Wase Local Government Area.

Authorities have warned that companies found responsible for safety violations will face strict sanctions.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Plateau State Government inspected the remote mining community, discovering that the site had been sealed off to prevent further exposure.

Preliminary reports suggested carbon monoxide and sulphite compounds may have caused the fatalities, though this is yet to be confirmed.

Farouk Yabo expressed disappointment that the licence-holding company was absent during the inspection, stressing their responsibility to ensure safe mining practices.

Peter Gwom emphasised stricter enforcement of mining regulations, noting the tragedy underscores the need for safety-first measures.

The National Mining Marshals reinforced that the government is determined to eliminate illegal mining, combining both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.

Meanwhile, Hamisu Anani praised the swift federal response and pledged ongoing community education on mining safety.

The Plateau State Government confirmed at least 33 miners died, with over 20 hospitalized due to suspected toxic gas exposure.

The investigation’s outcomes would determine sanctions, enforcement actions, and safety reforms to prevent future mining-related tragedies nationwide.
