Rivers State police impose movement restrictions ahead of bye-elections

The Rivers State police have announced movement restrictions in Ahoada East and Khana Local Government Areas (LGAs) ahead of the bye-elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

The measure aims to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible election.

According to the police, movement within and around the two LGAs will be restricted from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on election day.

A massive deployment of security personnel will be stationed at strategic points, polling units, and major roads to prevent violence, electoral malpractice, and other criminal activities.

Residents have been advised to comply strictly with the restriction and avoid unnecessary gatherings, especially near polling units.

The public is also urged not to carry weapons or suspicious items and to report any activity capable of disrupting the electoral process.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to the Electoral Act and other laws guiding elections.

He warned that anyone violating the restriction or engaging in acts that disturb peace will be arrested and prosecuted.

Parents and guardians were further urged to caution their children against being used to incite violence or disorder during the polls.

The authorities reaffirmed their commitment to creating a secure environment for eligible voters to exercise their civic rights without fear or intimidation.
