APC Congresses: Peace, crisis emerge

The All Progressives Congress in Delta State recorded mixed outcomes Saturday as its Local Government Area congresses produced consensus executives in most councils, while violence and disputes marred exercises in others.

Across the 25 councils, party leaders reported peaceful conduct and consensus arrangements, describing the exercise as orderly and well coordinated.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the congresses alongside security agencies and media representatives.

Members of the APC National Committee were received in Asaba by State Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, who urged adherence to party guidelines.

Committee Secretary, Hon. Simon Atigwe, expressed satisfaction with participation levels after monitoring activities across the three senatorial districts.

He described Delta as strategic to the party, commending members for maintaining calm and unity throughout most of the exercise.

In several councils including Uvwie, Isoko North, Isoko South, Ughelli North and Ughelli South, new chairmen emerged through affirmation and pledged to strengthen party structures.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, lauded members and urged mobilisation toward the reelection of Bola Tinubu and Sheriff Oborevwori in 2027.

Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other leaders also commended what they called a transparent and inclusive process.

However, the situation turned violent in Ethiope West, where armed men disrupted the congress, forcing members to flee amid reported gunshots.

The event, initially scheduled for Oghara Township Stadium, was relocated to Ovade, a development that reportedly heightened tensions among factions.

Violence broke out shortly after the arrival of Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, who represents Ethiope Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Security operatives formed a protective shield around the lawmaker and evacuated her from the venue as panic spread.

Some aides and supporters reportedly sustained injuries, though no official casualty figures were confirmed as of press time.

The congress in the area ended abruptly, with party leaders calling for calm and a thorough investigation into the incident.

In Ukwuani Local Government Area, the exercise took a different turn as rival factions produced two separate chairmen.

Both camps claimed legitimacy, each insisting its candidate enjoyed majority support among delegates and ward executives.

Efforts at reconciliation reportedly failed before voting commenced, deepening divisions within the local party chapter.

Observers warned that the emergence of parallel leadership in Ukwuani could weaken cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

State party authorities are expected to review developments in the affected councils and determine appropriate steps to restore order and unity.

Despite the isolated crises, stakeholders maintained that the Delta APC remained largely cohesive and focused on strengthening its structure for future contests.
