Senate seeks CAC chief’s sack

The Senate has resolved to call for the removal of the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Husaini Magaji, over what lawmakers described as his consistent refusal to honour invitations from the upper chamber.

The decision followed a motion moved during a session of the Senate Committee on Finance, where members of the President’s economic management team were present for budget-related discussions.

Tensions rose at the commencement of the meeting when invited heads of agencies were introduced and the CAC Registrar-General was absent.

The senators expressed frustration, noting that the commission had pending issues to clarify, particularly regarding revenue reconciliation.

Leading the charge, Orji Uzor Kalu criticised the agency chief for what he termed repeated disregard for legislative summons.

“Since I came to the Senate, he has always given excuses that he is in the Villa,” Kalu said, urging his colleagues to take decisive action.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Sani Musa, reinforced the concerns, pointing to unresolved financial questions that required the personal appearance of the CAC boss.

Backing the motion, Adams Oshiomhole proposed an additional measure withholding legislative approval of the commission’s 2026 budget until the Registrar-General appears to address lawmakers.

The Senate subsequently adopted the motion, formally urging the President to remove the CAC chief from office.

The resolution marks a significant escalation in tensions between the legislative arm and the leadership of the corporate regulatory body, as lawmakers assert their oversight powers over federal agencies.

The CAC, responsible for company registration and regulation in Nigeria, plays a key role in revenue generation and business oversight, making the standoff one with potential administrative and economic implications.
