Remi Tinubu honoured in Warri

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has been conferred with the revered traditional title of Utukpa-Oritse of the Warri Kingdom in Delta State, in recognition of her humanitarian service and commitment to women’s empowerment.

The colourful ceremony, held in Warri on Thursday, was presided over by the Olu of Warri Kingdom, Ogiame Atuwatse III, who formally bestowed the honour on the First Lady before an audience of political leaders, traditional rulers and community stakeholders.

The title, also known as Ugbone, translates as “Light of God,” symbolising what the kingdom described as her positive influence and contributions to social welfare initiatives across the country.

Speaking at the event, Senator Tinubu described the recognition as deeply personal, noting her maternal roots in Warri.

She said the honour reaffirmed her dedication to national service and the promotion of unity across ethnic and political divides.

Quoting Psalm 133, she emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence, urging Nigerians to embrace harmony for the nation’s progress.

“As Scripture reminds us, it is good and pleasant when people live together in unity, for there God commands His blessings,” she said.

As part of her outreach under the Renewed Hope Initiative, the First Lady announced a N50 million donation to support 1,000 women petty traders in the kingdom, reinforcing her advocacy for grassroots economic empowerment.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, commended her sustained engagement with the state, describing her as compassionate and consistent in her interventions.

He noted that her visits and empowerment programmes had positively impacted local communities.

Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other dignitaries were also present at the ceremony.

In his remarks, the Olu of Warri praised the First Lady as a role model for women and young girls, encouraging citizens to set aside grievances in pursuit of peace and development.

The monarch expressed pride in her achievements, noting that the honour reflects the kingdom’s appreciation of her service.

Senator Tinubu has received several traditional titles across Nigeria in recent months, alongside national honours including the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Thursday’s conferment further cements her growing profile as a public figure blending political leadership with cultural recognition.
