Lagos police arrest 7 after communal clash leaves 1 dead

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended seven suspects following a violent communal clash between youths from Otto and Ijanikin communities along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, which resulted in the death of one person.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a joint team of police officers and tactical squads to restore order after the expressway was blocked.
“The road was successfully cleared and reopened to traffic by 9:00 a.m., and normalcy has returned to the affected communities,” Adebisi said.
The deceased, identified as Akinyemi Omo Akin, was shot during the clash and later died in hospital.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the victim was shot during a gun duel between rival youths who allegedly brought in suspected cultists before police intervention.
Seven suspects from both sides have been detained and provided voluntary statements detailing their involvement.
Law enforcement also recovered one locally made pistol and two live cartridges from one of the suspects.
Tactical squads and anti-riot officers have been deployed to search surrounding areas for additional suspects who may have fled.
Adebisi warned individuals and groups against actions that could breach public peace, stating that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
She urged parents and guardians to caution youths against involvement in violent activities.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, is leading a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Residents have been reassured of their safety and encouraged to continue lawful activities without fear.
Citizens are also advised to report suspicious persons or activities to the police via the emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929.
