Hensard University, partners train 200 youths in pig farming

Hensard University has partnered the Federal Ministry of Education and the World Bank to train over 200 youths in modern pig production.
The initiative is funded under the IDEAS-TVET project, designed to strengthen technical and vocational education while tackling unemployment through practical, income-generating skills.
The programme will be held at the university’s campus in Toru Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area, and in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The organisers said the training would provide participants with hands-on knowledge in pig breeding, feeding, housing and farm management.
The goal is to promote self-reliance, stimulate agribusiness development and create sustainable employment opportunities across local communities.
At the inauguration, Mrs Ifeoma Major, leader of the IDEAS-TVET delegation, urged beneficiaries to approach the programme with dedication and discipline.
She disclosed that successful participants would receive start-up support packages to enable them establish and manage their own pig farms.
Also speaking, Professor Ajuruchukwu Obi, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Programme Manager, said the curriculum was carefully designed to meet industry standards.
He noted that the proposal underpinning the project was developed to ensure practical impact and long-term sustainability.
Professor Obi assured participants that experienced trainers would deliver quality instruction to equip them for success in agricultural enterprise.
He encouraged the youths to remain committed, stressing that pig farming offers significant potential for income generation and economic growth.
The training is scheduled to commence on Monday, March 2, 2026, marking a major step in advancing vocational skills and improving livelihoods in Bayelsa State.
