NSCDC mourns death of officer during tactical exercise

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Assistant Superintendent of Corps, Victoria Ogbodo, who tragically lost her life during a tactical simulation exercise at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.

The incident occurred as the Female Strike Force conducted emergency preparedness drills in advance of the 2026 World Civil Defence Day.

The exercise involved simulated rescue operations, including scenarios of kidnapped schoolchildren, designed to enhance operational readiness and tactical efficiency.

Officials confirmed that Igbodo sustained critical injuries during the drill and was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

Despite medical efforts to stabilise her condition, she was later pronounced dead, sending shockwaves through the corps.

Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi, described the loss as “painful and shocking,” extending heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues, and all personnel nationwide.

He directed a high-level delegation from the corps headquarters to visit the bereaved family, conveying the organisation’s sympathy and support.

Audi assured that the corps would provide a befitting burial for Ene Victoria and ensure that all entitled service benefits are delivered to her family in accordance with public service regulations.

He also urged personnel to remain steadfast in their duties, while acknowledging the inherent risks associated with emergency response and rescue operations.

“The tragedy is a sobering reminder of the hazards that come with tactical training.

”While we mourn, we must recommit to the highest safety standards to protect our personnel during exercises,” Dr. Audi stated.

He noted that stricter adherence to operational safety protocols and improved coordination could have potentially prevented the accident.

The NSCDC leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening workplace safety measures while continuing its mandate to protect lives and critical national infrastructure.

Internal investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.
