FG to arraign officers over airport breach

The Federal Government has announced plans to prosecute five security officers implicated in an alleged breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport involving former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The development followed a joint investigation conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Federal Ministry of Aviation into events that occurred on February 12, 2026.

According to officials familiar with the probe, the detained officers are accused of accepting bribes to grant unauthorised access to restricted sections of the airport.

Investigators alleged that the access was intended to interfere with lawful security procedures underway at the time.

Authorities said the five officers have been taken into custody and have reportedly made confessional statements.

They have since been transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for prosecution.

The government described the alleged actions as a serious compromise of national security protocols, particularly at a major international gateway.

In addition to the criminal cases, other personnel from the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service were found to have engaged in misconduct by misusing official uniforms to facilitate unauthorised entry into restricted areas.

While their actions were not deemed criminal, authorities said they would face internal disciplinary measures in line with service regulations.

Officials stressed that the investigation underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure and maintaining strict compliance with aviation security standards.

Security agencies have reiterated that any officer found undermining lawful operations, regardless of rank or affiliation, would face appropriate legal or administrative consequences.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny surrounding security operations involving high-profile political figures, with authorities signalling a zero-tolerance approach to breaches that could endanger national security or public safety.
