Sanwo-Olu pledges support for Lagos pensioners

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of retirees.

He emphasised dignity, fairness, and timely pension payments.

The governor spoke on Monday during a courtesy visit by the senior management of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), led by Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya, at Lagos House, Marina.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised national reforms spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at improving the welfare of pensioners, while highlighting Lagos State’s own initiatives.

He noted that the state has no outstanding pension arrears, ensuring that retirees receive their entitlements within two to three months of completing documentation.

“We understand and appreciate the life and time of our pensioners,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Those who have served the country deserve respect and recognition, and Lagos State ensures they are not left behind.

”The minimum we can do is to give them a space and listening ear so that in their older years, they feel valued.”

The governor also commended PTAD’s management for their commitment to the national assignment and encouraged collaboration between the federal agency and Lagos State to enhance service delivery.

Odunaiya highlighted Lagos as home to many of the nearly 200,000 pensioners under PTAD’s Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

She described Lagos as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse and lauded the Sanwo-Olu administration’s efforts to modernize pension administration in the state.

Odunaiya outlined two key reforms under the DBS. The first, the Pension Harmonisation Policy, seeks to correct disparities in pensions caused by outdated salary structures, restoring social justice.

The second provides eligible DBS pensioners with access to healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme, reducing their direct medical expenses.

“These reforms, approved in August 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, are designed to enhance the overall welfare and wellbeing of pensioners,” Odunaiya said.

“With Lagos leading by example, meaningful progress in pension management is possible nationwide.”

The visit also highlighted the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Lagos State Liaison Office, aimed at strengthening service delivery to DBS pensioners in the state.

Both the governor and PTAD officials emphasised that continued cooperation would ensure that retirees receive timely benefits, social justice, and dignified treatment.
