FG approves Alphanumeric digital postcode

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially approved the rollout of a modern, GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system across Nigeria, a move aimed at strengthening national planning, logistics, and emergency response capabilities.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

He said the initiative aligns with the strategic blueprint of his ministry and reflects the government’s commitment to building a robust digital infrastructure.

President Bola Tinubu personally approved the project during a council meeting.

Working closely with Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster General of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tijani explained that the new digital postcode system would significantly improve the accuracy of location addressing nationwide.

It would enable faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing, while supporting broader goals such as e-commerce growth, emergency service efficiency, and government service delivery.

“Beyond modernising postal operations, this system serves as a national enabler, facilitating urban planning, logistics, and connecting people and businesses more efficiently,” Tijani said on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

The Postmaster General echoed the minister’s remarks, describing the digital postcode as “critical national infrastructure” that extends beyond postal reform.

According to Odeyemi, the alphanumeric addressing framework will allow Nigeria to identify locations with unprecedented precision across urban and rural areas, enhancing service delivery, logistics, financial inclusion, and e-commerce penetration.

Odeyemi added that NIPOST’s recent performance demonstrates the organization’s growing relevance to Nigeria’s digital economy.

In May 2025, NIPOST recorded revenues exceeding N10 billion by digitizing operations and closing systemic leakages, marking a shift toward a modern, reliable postal and civic service.

“Through this initiative, the Federal Government aims to strengthen Nigeria’s digital backbone and create new opportunities for innovation, commerce, and national development,” she said.

The digital postcode rollout is expected to position NIPOST as a cornerstone of the country’s 21st-century digital economy.
