IPAC criticizes Electoral Act, warns parties could boycott 2027 elections

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has raised concerns over the recently enacted Electoral Act 2026, warning that if urgent amendments are not made, political parties across Nigeria might consider boycotting the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf Dantalle, IPAC Chairman, told Channels TV’s Politics Today on Friday that parties remain free to choose their mode of primary elections according to their constitutions.

He emphasised that several provisions in the new law, signed by President Bola Tinubu, could undermine internal party democracy and weaken electoral credibility.

Addressing journalists after an emergency meeting in Abuja, Dantalle said IPAC would mobilise parties nationwide to resist sections of the Electoral Act 2026 if the National Assembly fails to correct them.

He noted that while the law sought to fix anomalies in the Electoral Act 2022, it inadvertently introduced fresh challenges capable of weakening multiparty democracy.

IPAC’s warning signals a potential political standoff ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighting ongoing tensions over electoral reforms and party autonomy in Nigeria.
