Senate calls for strengthened military action against insurgents in Borno

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Armed Forces to intensify counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, emphasiding enhanced intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational readiness to curb insecurity in the region.

The call followed a motion by Senator Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North, in response to a deadly attack on a military base in Kukawa on March 9, 2026.

During the assault, suspected insurgents attacked the Army formation from multiple directions, killing three soldiers, including Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faroug, a key officer involved in resettling displaced residents.

Senator Monguno reported that military vehicles were burned and weapons looted, signaling a resurgence in attacks despite ongoing operations under Operation HADIN KAI.

According to the Senator Monguno, suspected insurgents launched a coordinated assault on an Army base in Kukawa Local Government Area in the early hours of March 9, 2026.

The attackers reportedly approached the military formation from multiple directions and engaged troops in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours.

The Senate commended the bravery of the troops and highlighted the strategic importance of sustained military operations, improved intelligence and surveillance.

A minute of silence was observed in honour of the soldiers who lost their lives defending the country.
