President Tinubu’s UK visit key to Nigeria’s growth – Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom as a crucial opportunity to advance Nigeria’s national interests, particularly in security, trade, and economic development.
Speaking during a television interview on Tuesday, the minister noted that the visit marks a historic moment, being the first state invitation extended to a Nigerian president by the UK in decades.
He stressed that the engagement is expected to yield significant benefits for Nigerians across multiple sectors.
According to Idris, the visit includes high-level meetings with King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing shared concerns such as security cooperation and economic partnerships.
President Tinubu, accompanied by the First Lady, arrived in London for the two-day visit, which features diplomatic engagements, a state banquet, cultural exchanges, and strategic talks with business leaders and the Nigerian diaspora.
Key outcomes expected from the trip include new agreements on trade, investment, defence, and cultural collaboration.
The minister also disclosed that discussions are ongoing regarding a proposed £746 million financing arrangement aimed at upgrading Nigeria’s major seaports.
Addressing concerns over the timing of the visit amid renewed insecurity in Nigeria, Idris said the president is deeply troubled by the recent attacks in Maiduguri but noted that the trip had been planned months in advance.
He added that security remains a central part of the discussions in London, with Nigeria seeking stronger collaboration with international partners to tackle terrorism and related threats.
“The president is saddened by recent developments at home, but this visit also provides an avenue to strengthen global partnerships that can help address such challenges,” he explained.
On the size of the delegation accompanying the president, the minister clarified that only a limited number of governors and cabinet members are present, while others remain in Nigeria to ensure continuity in governance.
