Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming riverine communities through strategic infrastructure development, declaring that ongoing projects are aimed at reshaping the region’s development narrative.
The governor made the statement on Tuesday during the inauguration of the 31-kilometre Ohoror–Bomadi Road, a key transport corridor linking several local government areas, including Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Burutu and Bomadi.
Describing the project as a landmark achievement, Oborevwori said his government is focused on ensuring that development reaches all parts of the state, particularly riverine communities that have historically faced infrastructural neglect.
“We are determined to change the story of our riverine areas by bringing sustainable development to every corner of the state, irrespective of terrain,” the governor stated.
He noted that the newly completed road would significantly enhance economic activities by improving connectivity, easing the movement of goods and people, and providing better access to essential services across the affected communities.
According to him, the project is expected to benefit at least five local government areas, reduce travel time, and create new economic opportunities for residents.
Oborevwori emphasised that infrastructure development remained central to economic growth, explaining that improved road networks would help farmers access markets, attract investors, and strengthen rural-urban integration.
Providing technical details, the governor said the project involved complex engineering solutions tailored to the swampy terrain, including sand filling, soil stabilisation, reinforced concrete structures, embankment protection and asphalt surfacing.
He added that the road spans between 6.5 and 10.3 metres in width, with hard shoulders in selected sections.
The governor also highlighted other projects under his administration, noting that the State Executive Council recently approved over N400 billion worth of projects across key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, power, judiciary and security.
On electricity, he disclosed that efforts are ongoing to improve power supply through the extension of transmission lines and installation of transformers, particularly in communities that have experienced prolonged outages.
He revealed that several areas without electricity for more than a decade have now been reconnected to the national grid.
Oborevwori further announced plans to strengthen security infrastructure, including the establishment of police divisions across all 25 local government areas and the creation of a Special Protection Base.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the road project cuts across multiple communities and was constructed using modern techniques to ensure durability in challenging terrain.
In his remarks, Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Dagidi Andaye, described the project as historic, noting that the area had not witnessed such a development in over 16 years.
He added that the road would reduce accidents and improve the socio-economic wellbeing of residents.
Community leaders and stakeholders, including Nicholas Mutu and James Manager, commended the governor for his inclusive leadership style and commitment to development.
They also pledged continued political support for both the state government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Residents and traditional rulers who attended the event expressed optimism that the road would ease transportation challenges, reduce costs, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The inauguration ceremony attracted a large turnout, reflecting widespread approval of the project and its anticipated impact on Delta State’s riverine communities.
