Nigeria, Sweden strengthen ties on trade, innovation, security

Nigeria and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, placing renewed emphasis on trade, innovation, and regional security, as both countries seek to expand mutually beneficial partnerships.

The outcome followed a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Ambassador Westerholm, who assumed office in August 2025, praised Nigeria for its warm hospitality and described the diplomatic relationship between the two nations as cordial and founded on strong goodwill.

She reiterated Sweden’s readiness to enhance cooperation across key sectors, particularly trade and investment, while highlighting opportunities in digital infrastructure, innovation, and technology development.

As an innovation-driven economy, Sweden expressed keen interest in supporting Nigeria’s transition toward a green and digital economy.

Ambassador Westerholm emphasised strengthening Nigeria’s technological ecosystem, fostering collaborations that leverage Swedish expertise in sustainable technology and digital solutions.

The discussions also touched on the energy and creative sectors.

Westerholm noted Nigeria’s global influence in music, particularly Afrobeats, as a potential avenue for partnership, combining Swedish knowledge in production and business models with Nigeria’s vibrant creative industry.

To boost commercial engagement, Sweden recently opened a trade office in Lagos, led by a government-appointed Trade Commissioner, signaling Stockholm’s growing interest in Africa’s largest economy.

This initiative followed previous high-profile engagements, including a visit by Sweden’s Crown Princess, underscoring the significance of bilateral relations.

On the multilateral and security fronts, Sweden commended Nigeria’s role in promoting a rules-based international order through active participation at the United Nations and other global platforms.

Both countries exchanged views on developments in West Africa, particularly the Sahel region, and discussed the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in maintaining regional stability.

Minister Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s strategic position in advancing regional integration and fostering dialogue amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

He emphasised the country’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and regional cooperation frameworks as key measures to address security and governance challenges.

Tuggar also pointed to progress under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), noting that increased private sector participation is essential to unlocking its full economic potential.

Both parties agreed to sustain high-level engagements and explore new avenues of collaboration to further consolidate their longstanding partnership.

As part of ongoing diplomatic efforts, Sweden’s State Secretary is scheduled to visit Nigeria in the coming days to continue discussions on bilateral cooperation.

The renewed partnership between Nigeria and Sweden highlights a shared commitment to leveraging diplomacy, trade, and innovation to drive economic growth and foster regional stability in West Africa.
