Adenuga addresses Papa Ajasco controversy

Veteran Nigerian filmmaker and producer Wale Adenuga has broken his silence over the growing controversy surrounding the popular “Papa Ajasco” brand, following recent comments and viral content linked to actor Abiodun Ayoyinka.

In a detailed statement, Adenuga clarified his position, expressing both surprise and measured support after watching a trending video featuring Ayoyinka in the iconic comic role.

“My first impression,” Adenuga noted, “was that he had taken the Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space.

”It is all well and good, and I am happy for him, as his social media efforts appear to be paying off.”

He went on to commend Ayoyinka’s long-standing contribution to the character, describing him as a versatile actor who has portrayed Papa Ajasco with remarkable skill and authenticity.

According to Adenuga, the actor closely mirrors the original cartoon figure he created in 1976 during his early publishing career.

Despite the recent public discourse, Adenuga emphasised that his relationship with Ayoyinka remained cordial, stating that there has been no serious fallout between them.

However, he expressed concern over what he described as widespread misinformation and emotional reactions that have trailed the actor’s recent media interview.

Adenuga said his response was necessary to set the record straight and protect the legacy of a brand that has entertained Nigerians for decades.

Providing background, he explained that Ayoyinka spent over 30 years as a civil servant with the Lagos State Government and was a prominent figure in the state’s cultural troupe.

This visibility, he added, brought him into contact with notable leaders, including President Bola Tinubu during his tenure as governor.

Adenuga also addressed claims regarding welfare and support, revealing that the production team had provided Ayoyinka with multiple vehicles over time, including a Mercedes-Benz, and that he owns a house in Ogun State.

On the issue of brand usage, Adenuga was firm. He stated that Ayoyinka is not permitted to use the “Papa Ajasco” name independently for personal ventures, stressing that the brand is copyrighted and must be protected from misuse that could harm its reputation.

He further clarified that the actor has not been restricted from taking on advertisement jobs, countering claims that he has been sidelined professionally.

Adenuga reiterated his commitment to preserving the integrity of the Papa Ajasco franchise while maintaining transparency in addressing public concerns.
