Kidnapped cocoa farmers freed, suspects arrested in Ibadan

The two remaining cocoa farmers abducted during a visit to the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan have regained their freedom, following coordinated efforts by security operatives and local stakeholders.
Their release marks the successful outcome of a joint operation involving security agencies, vigilante groups, and community leaders, who worked together to secure the victims’ freedom after the abduction incident.
Sources revealed that the rescue was achieved through a well-coordinated approach by the combined security team, which intensified efforts shortly after the farmers were kidnapped during their visit to the research institute on Saturday.
In a related development, police authorities confirmed the arrest of three individuals suspected to be behind the kidnapping.
The arrests were reportedly made within 24 hours of the incident, indicating a swift response by law enforcement.
While details surrounding the conditions of the victims’ release remain unclear, it is understood that the kidnappers had initially made demands.
However, police have not confirmed whether any ransom was paid.
Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Akeem Olatunji, who played an active role in the rescue efforts, confirmed in a telephone interview that all the abducted farmers have now been safely released.
He explained that the operation was carried out through the combined efforts of the police, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, and the Oluyole local vigilance group.
According to Olatunji, the rescued victims have since been handed over to the police for further procedures, including medical checks and debriefing.
He further disclosed that the entire operation was coordinated by the Security Adviser to the Oyo State Governor, retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni, whose leadership helped ensure the success of the mission.
The council chairman commended all those involved in the operation, praising their dedication and collaboration.
He also reassured residents of the area of his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to maintain safety and prevent future incidents.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, stated that all four kidnapped cocoa farmers have now regained their freedom.
The incident had initially raised concerns among residents and stakeholders, but the swift response by authorities has helped to restore calm in the affected community.
