NDLEA foils major opioid, drug trafficking operations across Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted large shipments of opioids, cannabis, and methamphetamine concealed in everyday items at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and a Lagos courier facility.
According to a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, two suspects bound for Italy were arrested in separate operations.
Operatives discovered drugs hidden in containers of body cream, winter jackets, and even carton walls.
Two suspects, Friday Ehianuka and Christian Agbonhese, were arrested while attempting to fly to Italy with thousands of tramadol and tapentadol pills.
Ehianuka had concealed the drugs in skin-lightening cream containers, while Agbonhese hid over 28,000 pills in winter jackets.
The crackdown extended beyond the airport.
NDLEA officers intercepted cannabis shipments known as “Loud” from the United States and foiled attempts to export methamphetamine to New Zealand.
In several states—including Kano, Lagos, Edo, Abuja, Oyo, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa—operatives seized hundreds of kilograms of skunk, codeine syrup, and hundreds of thousands of tramadol pills, arresting multiple suspects in the process.
Notably, more than 500,000 tramadol pills were recovered along the Kaduna-Zaria highway.
Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the officers involved and emphasised the importance of combining enforcement with public education.
Through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, NDLEA continued to engage students, teachers, and community members to raise awareness of the dangers of drug abuse.
These coordinated efforts highlight the agency’s intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling trafficking networks while fostering community vigilance against drug-related crimes.
