PDP urges unity ahead of national convention

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on its members to prioritise collective interest over personal ambition as preparations intensify for its National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 in Abuja.

Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, made the appeal during the 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

Mohammed stressed that the forthcoming convention comes at a critical time, noting that Nigerians are keenly observing the party’s actions and decisions.

He described the convention as more than a routine gathering, calling it a defining moment that would determine the party’s direction in the next phase of its political journey.

“As we approach the National Convention, I urge all stakeholders to place the collective interest of the party above personal ambitions,” he said.

He further urged members to demonstrate discipline, transparency, and respect for internal democratic processes, adding that the PDP must rise to expectations as a credible political force.

Mohammed maintained that the party remains a strong opposition platform with the structure and resilience required to offer effective governance in Nigeria.

He noted that recent efforts had stabilised the party following legal and political challenges, attributing the progress to unity and adherence to due process.

According to him, recent court rulings handled with reconciliation and inclusiveness have reinforced unity within the party.

“There is no victor nor vanquished—only a shared commitment to rebuild, reposition, and strengthen our party for the tasks ahead,” he added.

The chairman also commended the conduct of ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses across the country, describing them as largely peaceful and reflective of democratic values.

He praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his role in stabilising the party, highlighting his contributions and commitment.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, lauded the success of the congresses and described the ongoing electronic membership registration as a significant reform.

He said a credible membership database would enhance transparency, planning, and confidence among party members.

On zoning arrangements, Ohuabunwa urged party leaders to approach recommendations with fairness, openness, and a sense of justice.

“No arrangement is perfect, but what matters most is our willingness to accommodate one another for the overall good of the party,” he said.

Also speaking, Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, said the NEC meeting reflected renewed hope within the party, insisting that the PDP remains strong despite recent internal challenges.

He dismissed suggestions that the party was weakening, urging members to rally behind its leadership to strengthen its electoral prospects.

Similarly, House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, emphasised the need for unity and selflessness, describing the pre-convention period as crucial for consolidation.

On his part, Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen Forum, Austine Nwachukwu, noted that the party is experiencing renewed grassroots mobilisation driven by its ongoing electronic membership registration exercise.
