3 dead in Kebbi communal violence

A violent communal clash between Hausa and Fulani residents in Alwasa community has left at least three people dead and several others displaced, heightening tensions in the area.
The incident occurred in Argungu, a town in north-west Nigeria, where what began as a minor disagreement quickly escalated into deadly violence.
According to local accounts, the crisis started after a dispute among youths over reckless motorcycle riding, an act that sparked confrontation between the groups.
Eyewitnesses said the situation took a tragic turn when a Fulani youth allegedly stabbed a Hausa counterpart during the altercation.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene, leaving tensions to boil over and triggering outrage within the community.
The chairman of Argungu Local Government, Sani Gulma, explained that the violence intensified after the suspect escaped.
In response, some Hausa youths launched a reprisal attack on a Fulani settlement, resulting in further casualties and forcing many residents to flee their homes.
He noted that most of those killed were not directly involved in the initial dispute but became victims of the retaliatory violence.
Governor Nasir Idris visited the affected community to assess the situation and commiserate with families of the victims.
He condemned the killings, describing the incident as unacceptable, and warned against any further reprisals.
The governor directed security agencies to track down those responsible for initiating the crisis, assuring residents that justice would be served.
He stressed that no individual should take the law into their hands, urging aggrieved parties to seek lawful means of redress.
Idris also highlighted the long-standing peaceful coexistence between the Hausa and Fulani communities in Alwasa, noting that the area had enjoyed decades of harmony prior to the incident.
He warned that such unity must not be undermined by the actions of a few individuals.
As part of efforts to support affected families, the governor announced a donation of two million naira to each of the bereaved households.
Meanwhile, security operatives have been deployed to restore calm, although residents remain anxious amid fears of further violence.
The clash reflects a broader pattern of communal tensions in parts of Nigeria, where disputes often minor at the outset could quickly escalate into deadly confrontations if not promptly contained.
