Ogun nurse remanded over alleged abortion-linked death

A Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday ordered the remand of 37-year-old nurse Kehinde Adesanya over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder.
Adesanya faces a four-count charge related to conspiracy, attempting to procure an abortion, and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, filed an ex parte motion seeking her remand pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“The alleged offences occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta,” Babalola told the court, urging that Adesanya be remanded for an initial period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre.
According to the prosecutor, Adesanya conspired with others, who remain at large, to procure an abortion for 23-year-old corps member Victoria Ariyo, who later died from suspected complications arising from the procedure and was buried last week.
The offences are said to contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Babalola also noted that Abass Olalekan, an NYSC official alleged to have impregnated the deceased, had been previously arraigned and granted bail.
In her ruling, Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Sam-Obaleye granted the prosecution’s application, ordering Adesanya to be remanded at Ibara Correctional Centre pending further advice from the DPP.
The case was adjourned to May 26 for mention.
