Oscars to relocate from Hollywood in 2029

The Academy Awards will leave Hollywood after its centenary celebrations, organisers have announced, confirming a new long-term venue in central Los Angeles.
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the prestigious awards ceremony will move from the Dolby Theatre after the 2028 edition.
From 2029, the event would be hosted at the Peacock Theatre, located within the LA Live complex next to the Crypto.com Arena, home of the Los Angeles Lakers.
“For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make LA LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a joint statement.
The agreement forms part of a 10-year deal with AEG and coincides with a major shift in broadcast strategy, as the ceremony moves away from traditional network television in the United States to global streaming via YouTube.
The relocation also brings to a close the Oscars’ decades-long association with the Dolby Theatre, situated near the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the very first Academy Awards ceremony took place in 1929.
Although Hollywood has become synonymous with the Oscars, the ceremony has historically been staged at multiple venues, including locations in downtown Los Angeles and, during much of the 1960s, in Santa Monica.
At the most recent ceremony held on March 15, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another took home the award for Best Picture, highlighting another milestone in the event’s long-standing history.
