Several feared dead as gunmen attack Plateau community

Tension gripped Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, following a deadly shooting on Sunday.
Unidentified gunmen, reportedly riding motorcycles, opened fire on youths in the area.
A resident, speaking anonymously to Channels Television, said the attack occurred near Anguwan Rukuba junction in the evening.
“The attackers just rode past and started shooting sporadically. People were running in different directions,” the resident said.
In response, angry youths reportedly blocked major roads within the community, raising fears of escalating tension.
As of this report, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and the Police Public Relations Officer had not confirmed details of the incident.
This latest attack comes weeks after at least 20 security operatives and vigilantes were killed in an ambush by heavily armed bandits in Wanka and surrounding communities in Kanam LGA.
The Kanam Development Association (KADA) said the victims included 12 security personnel, among them two senior military officers, and eight vigilantes who assisted in protecting local communities.
According to KADA, the patrol team was ambushed while traveling on routine security operations in Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau communities.
Following the ambush, bandits reportedly stormed Kyaram, looted properties worth millions of naira, and rustled a large number of cattle.
KADA warned that such incidents are not isolated, noting that communities along the borders of Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi states have faced persistent attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling over the past three to four years.
The association described the deaths of security personnel and vigilantes as “deeply painful and unacceptable,” stressing that they died defending rural communities.
The attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in Plateau State and surrounding areas, as residents continue to face threats from banditry and armed criminal groups.
