CAN urges churches to heighten security after Plateau attack

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their congregations following the tragic killing of more than 40 people in Plateau State.

The attack occurred in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, on Palm Sunday, a day traditionally dedicated to peace and reflection.

CAN described the incident as both tragic and unacceptable, condemning the violence that claimed the lives of innocent men, women, and children.

In a statement on Monday, CAN President Daniel Okoh said the killings reflect a disturbing pattern of violence in the country.

He urged Christians to remain prayerful while also exercising caution during Holy Week activities, including Good Friday services and Easter vigils.

“As you prepare for solemnities and church gatherings, take deliberate steps to protect yourselves and your congregations.

”Stay alert and work with security agencies,” Okoh advised.

The CAN president also expressed concern over reports that attackers disguised themselves in military-style uniforms, calling it a dangerous development that undermines public trust.

He demanded a thorough investigation into the use of fake military attire by bandits and urged security agencies to act decisively.

Okoh stressed that Nigerians are growing weary of recurring violence and want concrete action.

While acknowledging efforts by the Plateau State Government, he emphasised that temporary measures are insufficient, calling for lasting security solutions and swift prosecution of those responsible.

The association warned that while faith must remain strong, it must be accompanied by vigilance, as the country faces a critical period requiring urgent intervention.
