Police nab teen stowaway at Lagos airport

The Airport Police Command has intercepted a 14-year-old suspected stowaway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, raising fresh concerns over aviation security.

According to authorities, the minor was discovered on the airport’s tarmac while attempting to gain illegal access beneath an aircraft—an act described as a serious breach of established aviation safety protocols.

Police spokesperson, Mohammed Adeola, said preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager had unlawfully entered a restricted area without authorisation.

The action, he noted, contravened Sections 2 and 3 of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) byelaws.

“Upon interception, the minor was taken into protective custody in line with due process and established child protection procedures,” Adeola said.

He added that the boy’s parents were immediately contacted, and all procedures including interviews were conducted in their presence.

The police also ensured that the minor received appropriate care and welfare support throughout the process.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Ogunbode Olufunke, reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding critical national infrastructure.

She described the airport as a sensitive facility requiring strict adherence to security regulations at all times.

While assuring that due process would be followed, the police urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant, particularly regarding children’s movements around restricted and high-risk environments such as airports.

The command further stated that the case would be handled in line with juvenile justice procedures, with the minor expected to be arraigned before the appropriate juvenile court.
