Bayelsa strengthens security under Diri’s leadership By Williams Bitere

A secure environment remains the bedrock of development, underpinning progress across critical sectors. Where safety is uncertain, growth is often stifled, and the prospects for sustainable advancement become limited.

Investors, both domestic and international, consistently favour regions where their assets are protected.

Areas affected by crime, unrest, or instability are typically avoided by businesses, while locations with robust security frameworks attract industries, factories, and entrepreneurs seeking stable ground for operations.

Under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri, Bayelsa State has gained recognition as one of Nigeria’s safer states.

The administration’s ASSURED PROSPERITY agenda places strong emphasis on safeguarding lives and property through coordinated and effective security strategies.

Governor Diri has repeatedly stressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order.

Central to this effort are regular Security Council meetings, which bring together relevant agencies to strengthen collaboration, improve response times, and reinforce the overall security architecture of the state.

In line with these efforts, a law enacted in December 2021 paved the way for the establishment of a unified community-based security outfit.

Subsequently, in February 2023, the governor inducted 603 trainees drawn from 105 wards into the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps.

The legislation harmonised existing local security structures, including Operation Doo-Akpo, Bayelsa State Volunteers, and the Bayelsa Vigilante group, into a single coordinated body.

This integrated force now works closely with formal security agencies to enhance the protection of residents and their property.

Further demonstrating its commitment to public safety, the state government approved the deployment of modern surveillance infrastructure in the capital, Yenagoa.

In December 2024, authorities sanctioned the installation of 200 additional Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, alongside the upgrade of 50 existing units.

The surveillance network covers key locations such as major roads, public institutions, and other high-traffic zones across the city.

With real-time monitoring capabilities, the system enables security agencies to respond more swiftly and effectively to incidents as they arise.

Experts note that a stable security environment encourages greater participation in economic activities, including trade, employment, and investment.

It supports efficient supply chains, boosts productivity, and fosters open markets.

Conversely, insecurity often leads to business shutdowns, job losses, and weakened economic performance.

With these measures in place, Bayelsa State continues to project itself as a secure destination, reinforcing public confidence under the stewardship of Governor Douye Diri.
