17 killed in attack on Mbalom community, Benue State

At least 17 people have been killed following a violent attack on the Mbalom community during Easter celebrations.

The incident occurred on Sunday when suspected armed assailants reportedly stormed the community, opened fire on residents, and set multiple homes ablaze.

Several others remained missing, and many residents were forced to flee.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and unprovoked, with survivors searching nearby bushes for missing family members.

Homes and properties were destroyed, exacerbating the displacement of residents.

A local source said, “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”

In response, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, conveyed Governor Hyacinth Alia’s condemnation, describing the attack as “heinous” and unacceptable.

The governor expressed deep sympathy to the victims’ families and assured them of the state government’s support.

Governor Alia highlighted a pattern of “calculated and selective attacks” in parts of Benue State and pledged to strengthen security measures to prevent further violence.

He also commended security agencies for their prompt response and urged intensified efforts to apprehend those responsible. Investigations are ongoing.

The attack mirrors previous incidents involving killings, arson, and displacement, raising continuing concerns about the safety of rural communities in Benue State.
