Tinubu commits to modernising Nigeria police force, boosting training, intelligence

President Bola Tinubu has announced a strategic drive to deepen investment in police training, intelligence systems, and modern law enforcement technologies, as part of a wider effort to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.
Speaking at the National Police Day Grand Parade on Tuesday in Abuja, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasised that national security forms the foundation for sustainable development.
“Every nation is only as safe as those who keep vigil while others sleep,” he said, stressing the importance of equipping and motivating officers to tackle evolving security challenges.
The President outlined plans to strengthen capacity building, modernise equipment, and enhance intelligence operations across the country.
He also pledged to improve the welfare of police personnel, highlighting that a well-trained and well-supported force is essential to protecting citizens and maintaining public order.
Paying tribute to officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, Tinubu described their sacrifices as part of the nation’s enduring moral legacy.
He also commended serving personnel for their resilience, urging them to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.
“The uniform you wear is not a licence for arbitrariness; it is a covenant of service,” he stated.
Earlier in the ceremony, Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reaffirmed the force’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and operational efficiency.
Disu emphasised that the leadership is focused on building an intelligence-led, community-focused police institution capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians, while addressing misconduct within the ranks.
The event featured ceremonial parades, tactical displays, and attendance from senior government officials, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic corps, reflecting the administration’s determination to strengthen public trust in law enforcement agencies.
President Tinubu’s remarks underscore the administration’s prioritisation of security reform as a central pillar for national progress, signalling a renewed focus on modern, professional, and accountable policing across Nigeria.
