Rivers govt. reaffirms commitment to better healthcare delivery

The Rivers State Government has reiterated its resolve to strengthen and expand healthcare services across the state, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara assuring residents that improving public health remains a central priority of his administration.
In a message released on Tuesday to commemorate this year’s World Health Day, the governor underscored ongoing efforts to enhance access to quality and affordable medical care.
He noted that his government would continue to pursue policies and programmes aimed at ensuring that all residents benefit from improved healthcare services.
Addressing citizens directly, the governor urged individuals and communities to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.
He emphasised the importance of preventing avoidable diseases through healthy living habits and proper hygiene, while also calling for stronger community participation in health awareness campaigns and grassroots initiatives.
Extending his goodwill to residents, Fubara stated that his administration remains focused on delivering meaningful reforms in the health sector.
He highlighted achievements recorded since assuming office, including the recruitment of more than 2,000 healthcare workers, the rehabilitation of several medical facilities, and the rollout of a health insurance scheme designed to broaden access to care.
According to him, these efforts are part of a broader vision to position Rivers State as a hub for medical tourism, where residents and visitors alike can access efficient, affordable, and high-quality healthcare services.
World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, serves as a global platform to raise awareness on critical health issues.
The theme for this year, “Together for health: Stand with science,” draws attention to the role of scientific innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based approaches in advancing healthcare outcomes.
It also reflects the “One Health” concept, which recognises the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health.
The state government’s recent interventions in the sector include the revival and expansion of previously neglected zonal hospitals in Bori, Omoku, Ahoada, and Degema.
In addition, no fewer than 153 primary healthcare centres have been upgraded to improve service delivery at the grassroots level.
To further strengthen the workforce, the administration has not only recruited thousands of health professionals but also approved the promotion of over 400 staff members at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
An additional 500 personnel have also been employed to enhance operational efficiency in the facility.
The statement, issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Onwuka Nzeshi, reiterated the administration’s determination to build a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of the people.
